FlightSem Software (FSS) Addon Scenery for FSX – Module 4: Netley Chapel, Castle & Abbey
—————————————————————————————————————-

Scenery Module 4: After the Crimean war, Queen Victoria ordered a Military Hospital to be built in the UK. Its purpose was to train army nurses and doctors and to treat military patients to ensure their swift return to duty. Netley was chosen as the site because it was near to Southampton so that hospital ships from around the British Empire could safely dock and disembark patients. For over 100 years the site was a great military hospital, housing wounded troops of many nationalities from the 1914-1918 Great War. Close by is Netley Castle, one of King Henry VIII’s Southern Coastal artillery forts built to defend Southampton Water from a French attack and possible invasion. Between 1939 and 1998 the property was converted into private housing and used as a nursing home. The castle, surrounded by approximately 3.8 acres of woodland, is once again a private residential home, but sadly is closed to the public, despite being visible from Southampton Water and accessible by land and sea. Within walking distance is Netley Abbey, from which the village got its name, and is the most complete Cistercian monastery in southern England. It originated when a colony of monks of the Cistercian Order crossed Southampton Water from Beaulieu to establish a new religious house at Netley in 1239. Set along the wild, wooded slopes above Southampton Water, the Abbey appears to be the perfect medieval ruin. Almost all of the walls of the 13th century church still stands today.
