L-1049G Swissair HB-IBJ

Repaint of payware Red Wing L-1049G Super Constellation.
 

This repaint shows fictious Swissair L-1049G HB-IBJ. Swissair never flew Constellations. Nevertheless, there were obviously two Connies in Swissair livery.

In 1949, Swissair wanted to expand its transatlantic service and supplement the DC-4s. It was initially decided to lease two L-749s from KLM. In 1950, crews set out for Holland to fly HB-IBI and HB-IBJ to Zurich – the two Connies had already been painted and re-registered. At the very last minute, Swissair decided otherwise and the crews returned to Switzerland without the Connies.

What had happened? The unexpected devaluation of the British pound had drastically worsened Swissair’s economic situation.
